Mavro Ampelisimo is the most widely planted black variety in Cyprus and, with Xynisteri, the backbone of Commandaria. Blue-black seeded berries, dual purpose: they work equally well on the table and in the tank. Vigorous, very productive and drought-tolerant — one of those vines that stands where others will not. Ripening is late. Its own productivity is the trap: left loaded it drops in quality, so table fruit needs thinning. VIVC records it as Mauro, no. 27628 — the name “Mavro Ampellisimo” comes from a Cypriot synonym source and does not appear there verbatim.
