Care guide
In Cyprus
Bangalow Palm comes from the moist forests of eastern Australia, where it grows along stream banks and in damp gullies. It therefore needs regular, ample irrigation, especially in summer, in soil that holds moisture yet drains; the Australian National Botanic Gardens stress that a plentiful water supply is very important, particularly in dry periods. It grows in sun or partial shade and in a range of soils, doing best in soil rich in organic matter. It does not handle frost well; whether it suits a frost-prone site depends on the local microclimate. Young plants benefit from some protection. Plant out once the risk of frost has passed.
Uses in gardens and projects
With a slender trunk, feathery fronds and fast growth, it brings a tropical look to hotel gardens, pool surrounds, courtyards and entrances, planted singly or in groups. In the wild it reaches up to about 30 m, so it needs clear overhead space. It dislikes root disturbance and is hard to transplant, so choose its final position from the start. Young plants can also be grown in containers.
