In Cyprus

Spatziá (Salvia fruticosa) is the sage of Cyprus: an aromatic, perennial shrub for sunny spots that will also take a little partial shade. According to Kew's Plants of the World Online it is native to Cyprus, as well as to other parts of the central and eastern Mediterranean. A Cyprus Department of Agriculture guide notes that sage grows in a range of soils but prefers medium-textured, well-drained ground; heavy soils that hold water do not suit it. Water regularly until it has established; after that, give supplementary water according to soil moisture and the weather. Pots dry out differently and need checking more often. The same guide gives autumn as the best planting season, continuing into April.

Uses in gardens and projects

As an aromatic shrub, spatziá fits dry gardens, rockeries and herb borders alongside thyme and oregano, as well as plantings of Cyprus native species. It can be proposed for banks and low-irrigation planting schemes, provided the soil drains well. As the Department of Agriculture notes, sage leaves and flowers are used for tea. Its final size depends on position and pruning.
