In Cyprus

Philodendron ‘Xanadu’ is a tropical plant from southern Brazil and Paraguay that can be grown outdoors only in warm climates. Outside it takes sun to partial shade, but in Cyprus it is wise to shield it from the fierce midday summer sun. It wants soil rich in organic matter that stays moist yet drains well; overwatering turns the leaves yellow. It is frost-tender, so plant it out only once the risk of frost has passed. In frost-prone areas, grow it in a container that can be moved to a suitable protected space for the winter.

Uses in gardens and projects

It forms a dense, rounded mound of large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves; NC State gives its size as about 0.9–1.5 m tall and wide. It adds a tropical accent along walkways, at the edge of patios and courtyards, in foundation planting against buildings and in massed plantings. It also suits large containers, or indoor use in bright, indirect light. It is low-maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can Philodendron Xanadu take full sun?
Outdoors it takes sun to partial shade. In Cyprus it is best shielded from strong midday sun; indoors it wants bright, indirect light.
How big does Philodendron Xanadu grow?
According to NC State, about 0.9–1.5 m tall and wide, with a dense, mounding habit.
How much water does it need?
It likes soil that is moist but well drained. Overwatering yellows the leaves, so water according to soil moisture and weather.
Is it toxic to children and pets?
Take care. The leaves and stems contain calcium oxalate: chewing or eating them causes swelling and pain in the mouth, and the sap can irritate skin. Keep it out of reach of children and pets that chew plants.
