In Cyprus

Ficus ‘Amstel’ (Ficus binnendijkii ‘Amstel King’) is an evergreen fig with narrow, glossy, downward-pointing leaves that are bronze-tinted when young. It is sensitive to cold: the RHS gives it a hardiness rating of H1c, a minimum of roughly 5–10 °C, and recommends it mainly as a houseplant or conservatory plant that can go outside in summer. In Cyprus it is safest in a container in a bright room with indirect light, moved to a covered terrace in the warm months and protected in winter. Water moderately while it is growing and sparingly in winter. For a permanent outdoor position, judge suitability on the microclimate.

Uses in gardens and projects

It is mainly used in large containers in hotel lobbies, offices, shops and bright atriums, and on covered terraces in the warm season. The RHS gives a height of up to about 3 m as a houseplant; in a pot, the size depends on the container and pruning. It needs no regular pruning, though overlong shoots can be shortened in late winter.
