Care guide
In Cyprus
Elaeagnus × ebbingei is a dense evergreen shrub which, according to the RHS, tolerates dry soils and coastal winds. It grows in full sun to partial shade and in a wide range of well-drained soils. The RHS notes that it may become chlorotic on shallow chalky soils, which is worth checking on limestone sites in Cyprus. It carries an H5 rating, hardy in most of the UK even in severe winters; in Cyprus, each site should still be judged on its microclimate. Once well established, give supplementary water according to soil moisture and weather. Planting is usually in autumn or spring.
Uses in gardens and projects
Grown freely it reaches about 2.5–4 m in height and spread according to the RHS, making it a classic choice for boundary hedges, windbreaks and green screens around homes, hotels, industrial sites and public projects. It can be shaped by pruning, though a tightly clipped hedge needs regular upkeep. Small, fragrant white flowers in autumn are a bonus near seating areas and entrances.
